Results from Malpas Club Ch. and Budapest International.
Megan Owens at Frome.
Congratulations to Steve Vickery for a good performance in Budapest.
He increased his WCU grade by 78 points and also gets a FIDE rating
of 1787
It seems Gary Thomas withdrew after 4 games. The results on
the Official site don't quite add up, though.
Megan Owens had a good result at Frome, 3.5/4

Monmouth B have won the Second Division, ahead of NGA
Mathew Gregory wins the best performance
trophy with 7/11, doubling his expected score.
Nigel Granville had the highest percentage, with 9.5/11
Simon Tang has won the best performance trophy
scoring 6 pts instead of 1 from 10 games.
Three wins against Beryl Hughes definitely helped.
Steve Williams (Malpas) gets the highest percentage
trophy for an impressive 8.5/10.
Congratulations to both players.
Final Scores
East Glamorgan 11.5, West Wales 9.5, Gwent 9
Despite finishing third, Gwent gained 51 Elo points
Compare this with +62 at Fishguard and -46 at the
Welsh Championships
Abergavenny A made sure of the Div. 1 title.
Malpas C and Aber B are relegated. The latter team scored
their first win, against Newport A.
For rating purposes, Mathew's initial grade has been
changed from 1466 to the more realistic 1626
The evidence indicates that his initial rating (1445) was
much too low. It rose to 1582 in just 16 games. As agreed,
this will be used for rating purposes from the start of the season.
The main purpose is to prevent his opponents from losing
points. The average Gwent rating increases by about 1 elo
point, still 35 lower than other Welsh regions.
He can now play on a higher board in the NDL, but otherwise
his grade remains 1445.
I have just received the first-round results and second-round
draw for the KO Cups.

Andrew's official rating was and remains 1805.
This should be used for all purposes except board order in the
in the Newport and District League.
Andrew's grade increased by 213 points in 16 games.
As announced in July (see below), I've revised his original grade
to 1999. It still went up, to 2078. His opponents gain a few points.
The new value (1999) applies for board order.
The Performance table and other League rules are not affected.
I didn't make the decision, but agree with it. Anything else might
create anomalies when others are regraded.
Some of the data I've inherited may not be totally reliable.
It is possible that some ratings are much too low. I don't know.
So I am going to use the following rule.
If players score 3 points more than expected in their first 16 games, their initial
rating will be increased.
Increase = improvement times 35 divided by their K-factor.
